Yes ... under the bonnet is a key point here. The list started pre the PN
list and to some degree, elements of it's original basis have been taken
onboard with the PN developments.
I certainly share Chris' viewpoint and highly value a wider forum on public
library issues. But at the same time am aware that having the list provided
for us on the HE infrastructure might mean members have to keep within
certain boundaries. It's probably not just a question of the nature of a
list, but also, what sort of list content is appropriately & publicly funded
anyway.
Thinking aloud for with a quick example of straying beyond even a wider
publicly funded remit, much as one might have sympathy for the ongoing
issues in Cuba ... is the list really an appropriate home for issues like
that?
So ... and taking into account at least another 6-7 responses after the one
from Chris, if we did want a list whose content is quite without boundaries
on public library issues in general & worldwide and etc. can anyone start up
any old list on Jiscmail? We might have to both get someone to run it, and
find another platform for that. There are a number of these "free" platforms
on the web ... but, no, I'm not volunteering either!
Even so, there seems to be a reasonable case for re-defining & widening to
some degree the purpose of the list on the JISCmail platform - after all,
ICT itself is becoming an increasingly integral part of almost everything we
do in one way or another ... & aren't DfES & DCMS discussing sharing
resources more widely? Anything that moves along the healthy development of
public library services has to be a valuable contribution to the world of
learning, the home of the HE sector.
