Subject: [M-R] Voting patterns in the French presidential election
medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear All
A question of regional culture...
The Independent had a map of French presidential voting patterns which
showed which candidate came first in each department and their percentage of
the poll there. The Socialist candidate came first in a block of departments
in the far south west;
= régions fortement marquées par une tradition de gauche depuis le XIXème
siècle (faible industrialisation ; déchristianisation précoce)
the National Front candidate came first in peripheral departments from the
Pas de Calais to the Rhone delta.
The former is historically an area of relatively strong Protestantism,
n'est-ce pas? And while one would expect a high FN vote in southern
departments with largish populations of North African descent, what of its
north-eastern and eastern strongholds?
Are these simply to be explained in terms of mixed Franco-Germanic roots in
Alsace-Lorraine etc. = certainement, pas. La forte identité culturelle de
l'Alsace est un phénomène très ancien.
and language rivalries on the Belgian border, or are deeper historic
identities visible (as may be the case with the Socialist south-west)? Is
this corridor related in some ways to a sort of residual Burgundy = ???????
, and if so, how does it work in terms of culture et al?
Best wishes
Graham
