medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (22. April) is the feast day of:
Soter (d. 175) I confess I included Soter today because I didn't know
there had ever been a pope of that name. Soter perhaps came from Campania,
and was bishop of Rome 166-175. Hardly anything is known of his
activities, but Soter was sometimes honored as a martyr in later ages. His
cult was reduced in 1969.
Leonides (d. 202) Leonides was the father of the theologian Origen.
Leonides, too, was one of the great philosophers of his time. He was
martyred during the persecution of Septimius Severus in his home city of
Alexandria.
Mareas (d. c. 345) Mareas was a bishop in Persia. In c. 345 he and 21
other Persian bishops, over 200 priests, and many nuns and monks were
martyred at the orders of King Shapur II.
Opportunata (d. c. 770) The cult of Opportunata is still active in the
diocese of Sees, Paris, and Meaux. She was the sister of bishop Chrodegang
of Sees, and at a young age became a nun at Montreuil (Normandy).
Opportunata became abbess, and tradition reports that she was known for her
care of all the nuns in her charge.
Aegidius of Assisi (blessed) (d. 1262) Aegidius was born in Assisi late in
the 12th century, and became a disciple of Francis in 1209. On journeys
through Italy, Spain, Palestine, and even North Africa Aegidius spread his
new order. Later he became a notable mystic.
Francesco of Fabriano (blessed) (d. 1322) Francesco Venimbene was born in
Fabriano (Italy) in 1251, and at the age of 16 entered the Franciscan
order. He became a companion of St. Bonaventure. Francesco founded the
first library of the Franciscan order. (I *hope* he did more than that to
get himself beatified, but my sources don't say anything more.) He was
beatified in 1775.
