medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Writing European Histories: Centres and Peripheries
Conference at University of Southern Denmark, Odense, 30 and 31 May 2002
Histories of Europe are being published in increasing numbers, and the
constructions of various concepts of Europe have been examined in both
historical and contemporary perspectives. However, the dynamics between
centres and peripheries in this context have not been studied in the same
depth. The conference aims to present and discuss different approaches to
the writing of European histories and to integrate these with a broader
understanding of the dynamics between centres and peripheries.
The conference will consider the period from the Middle Ages to the modern
era, and will focus on three main themes:
o Concepts of Europe
o The exchange of ideas and institutions between centres and
peripheries
o The relationship between the writing of national and
European histories
