medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (9. April) is the feast day of:
Marcellus of Die (d. 474 or 510) Marcellus, born in Avignon sometime in
the first third of the fifth century, succeeded his brother as bishop of
Die in 463. From the beginning there was opposition to his episcopate.
The Arians succeeded in having him banished for several years; he was able
to return but had to suffer considerable persecution.
Waldetrud (d. c. 688) The seventh-century Waldetrud (Waltraud) was married
to the also-saintly Vincentius and produced four children, two of whom were
later regarded as saints. After all the children had entered monasteries
on her advice, Waldetrud and her husband also entered the monastic life.
Waldetrud founded the convent of Mons in Belgium, which she led until her
death. Waldetrud's cult was already active in the eighth and ninth
centuries, and continues today.
Hugh of Rouen (d. 730) Hugh was born in c. 680 in Burgundy. He became a
monk at a young age. From 722 on Hugh was simultaneously archbishop of
Rouen, bishop of Paris, and abbot of Fontenelle and Jumieges. Shortly
before his death he abdicated all his offices and lived as a simple monk at
Jumieges.
Casilda of Toledo (d. sometime in 11th cent.) Casilda was born in Toledo
(Spain), the daughter of a Muslim emir. She converted to Christianity
after she was healed of a sickness. After that Casilda lived as a
hermitess and cared for Christian prisoners.
Ubaldo Adimari (blessed) (d. 1315) Ubaldo was born in Florence in 1246 and
at the age of thirty entered the Servite order. He was noted for his
exemplary penitential life, and died an exemplary death. He was beatified
in 1821.
Thomas of Tolentino (blessed) (d. 1321) Thomas, a native of Tolentino
(Italy), became a Franciscan friar and a missionary to the east. While on
a journey to China he and several companions were captured by Muslims near
Bombey (India) and beheaded. His head was taken back to Tolentino. Thomas
was beatified in 1894.
