medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hugh of S. Victor uses the term, though this is late for this query. I
wonder if Isidor is early enough for the enquirer? Isidor (Etym.) gives,
at 6.16.3:
Inde Christianitas [Lindsay's capital] in diversas haereses scissa est,
quia non erat licentia [episcopis] in unum convenire, nisi tempore
supradicti imperatoris. Ipse enim dedit facultatem Christianis libere
congregare.
So Lindsay from a quick e-check, and there may be more places. The
spatial/eschatological/spiritual question may well have been opaque to
Isidor, though I suspect he regarded 'christianitas' as having
geographic boundaries.
