medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
The World of Eleanor of Aquitaine
Literature and Society in Southern France between the Eleventh and Thirteenth Centuries
An International Symposium to be held at the University of Bristol under the Aegis of the Colston Research Society and the Centre for Medieval Studies
8-10 April 2003
The University of Bristol Centre for Medieval Studies, in conjunction with the Colston Research Society, is organizing an interdisciplinary international symposium in April 2003. The theme is southern French literature and society between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries. The symposium is timed to anticipate the 800th anniversary, in 2004, of the death of Eleanor of Aquitaine, the woman who symbolizes much of this place and time in the scholarly and popular imaginations. With its historic links to southern France and its present-day cultural and academic ties to Bordeaux, Bristol is an excellent venue for this event.
The aim is to bring together leading experts in the literature and history of the period, and to stimulate interdisciplinary debate on the cultural, artistic, social, political and religious experience of the central medieval Midi. One of the aims of the symposium will be to challenge the traditional distinction that is drawn between the Aquitanian and Gascon south-west and the ‘deep south’ of Languedoc and Provence.
The speakers include:
John Arnold (UEA)
Malcolm Barber (Reading)
Thomas Bisson (Harvard)
Simon Gaunt (King’s College, London)
John Gillingham (formerly LSE)
Ruth Harvey (Royal Holloway, London)
Tony Hunt (St Peter’s College, Oxford)
Laurent Macé (Toulouse-Le Mirail)
Jane Martindale (formerly UEA)
William D. Paden (Northwestern University)
Linda Paterson (Warwick)
