NATIONAL PERINATAL EPIDEMIOLOGY UNIT
UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD
DIRECTOR
Applications are invited for the position of Director of the National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit (NPEU). The NPEU is an internationally recognised, multi-disciplinary research unit attached to the Department of Public Health, University of Oxford, which, as part of the community based clinical subjects, obtained a 5* rating in the 2001 RAE. The NPEU, established by the Department of Health (DH), undertakes research about improving health and welfare of women and infants through studies of pregnancy, childbirth and newborn babies as well as long term outcomes. The annual budget is approximately £1.5 million comprising both the core funding from the DH and grants and contracts from other funders. Although the DH funding for the NPEU covers services provided in England, its research and collaborative links are world-wide and its work has influenced national and international policy and practice. The unit employs about 35 staff (full and part-time) and the Director will have the opportunity to work closely with an excellent and exciting group of senior researchers.
The Director might come from any of the disciplines central to the work of the NPEU: Epidemiologist, Social Scientist, Health Economist, Statistician, Obstetrician, Midwife or Paediatrician provided they have the appropriate skills and experience as outlined in the job description. The Director will either hold the grade of Senior Clinical Research Fellow (£52,640-£68,505) or that of Academic Related Researcher Scale IV (£39,394-£45,338) depending on whether the post is filled by someone with clinical qualifications. The contract will be for five years in the first instance.
More information about the NPEU and a copy of the job description can be obtained from the NPEU website: www.npeu.ox.ac.uk.
