Hi Everyone,
The idea of disability as loss is one of those that is a perfect
example of how language can be used to misrepresent actuality. The word
"rehabilitation" is extensively used, as in "rehabilitation worker",
"rehabilitation training" and so on. Yet the "re" is very often
inappropriate, since it implies restoration of something that was once
there. I have never been fully sighted, so I don't need rehabilitation
- but I don't think I need habilitation either. I wonder who invented
"rehabilitation"?
Cheers,
Brendan.
