NICAN
"Putting Recreation Back into Sport"
In September 2002 NICAN will be coordinating the "Putting Recreation Back
Into Sport" conference. The conference seeks to educate individuals and
organisations on creating opportunities for people with disabilities to
become involved in sport at a recreational level. The conference will
target mainstream sporting organisations as well as interested individuals
to progress the development and implementation of inclusive practices.
Specifically, the conference aims to:
v educate service providers on how to provide opportunities for
participation in recreation by people with disabilities;
v provide inspiration and a new experience for attendees;
v provide networking opportunities.
The conference will be 3 tiered:
v Theoretical: - lectures
v Practical: - workshops and discussion
v Experiential: - "having a go"

DELIVERY OF PAPERS
Papers need to be clearly identified within one of the 3-tiered streams of
the conference:
v Theoretical - Lecture sessions are conducted throughout the
Conference. Lectures are 60 minutes in duration, with up to 100 delegates
attending each session. Lectures involve theory-based topics presented in
lecture rooms set up with seating and standard audiovisual equipment.
v Practical - Workshops are a combination of lecture and practical
work. Workshops are held in large rooms with little or no seating. The
presenter should clearly state what the message/concept of the workshop is.
Explain why this concept has relevance and the expected outcomes of the
session. As a general rule, if there is one central concept to be taught,
and practice or drill work is part of the learning experience, then it
recommended that you use the workshop format. In addition, theory-based
topics can be combined with participation in a workshop format. The
suggested format for a workshop session is an introduction of 15 - 20
minutes, followed by the practical component (this can be interspersed with
some theory) and concluding with a lecture component of at least 5 - 10
minutes. Workshop sessions may also be conducted outdoors.
v Experiential this involves the delegate participating in a
come'n'try session. It is expected that each participant will be taught
new skills and have the opportunity to put into practice what they have
just learnt. These sessions may also take place outside conference
hours. (example: surfing at sunrise)
Full presentations will be required to be submitted by
15 March 2002.
TRADE DISPLAYS
