Hi Larry and everyone,
Well, I too had never come across the term "adventitious", though I
guessed it must mean "acquired". I looked it up in my Concise Oxford
Dictionary, but that suggested things like "accidental", so I was no
further forward. As far as sight loss is concerned, I'm supposed to be
in that business! But clearly it must mean "acquired".
The personal situation you describe, of your vision deteriorating
with age, is common. The level of light reaching the retina at age
sixty is generally only forty per cent of that at age twenty. Also,
most people become longer sighted as they get older, which is why one
often sees older people holding books at arms length when reading.
There are, of course, many other conditions that can cause vision to
deteriorate with age.
I sympathise with the problem of wearing thick glasses. My
prescription is for a +12 lens for my right eye, so I have to have a
similar lens on the left just to balance things up. Actually, I settle
for a +10 so as to get a slightly larger field of vision, although with
less magnification. Thick lenses do get in the way of tasks like taking
photographs and using binoculars.
By the way, I too find the auto replies and other associated junk
annoying.
Cheers,
Brendan.
