Lets worry this tooth a little more:
Difficulties with plugins not being installable at workstations or with user
rights in VLEs and servers etc. are all down to network management and
standards.
Delivery standards run something like ip, http, html, dhtml, java, xhtml, xml,
pdf, (real?). All of these being platform independent.
Networks need ip (and many supporting RFC standards), ldap, directory services,
multicasting, etc.
Practically anything else is platform or software dependant and can hardly be
managed. Thus .doc format defeats kiosk users, many Linux users, some mac
users, home tv users, soon 3G phones etc.
Users need to be encouraged to save direct to html or convert to pdf.
Use a library analogy - 400 years of development, heavily managed.
Versus IT - 40 years development, only the "standards to cling to".
