Whilst I can understand the need for computing services in large organisations
to want to prevent staff (especially academics) from tinkering with their
computers or installing illegal software it does mean that when a much needed
plug-in is required to run a particular media clip it can be downloaded from the
web but not installed if the user does not have administrator rights!
How do other HEIs, colleges and large organisations manage this situation? Do
you give all users the rights necessary to be able to install plug-ins? Is there
a lesser level than administrator in WIN200/NT that will allow a user to install
a plug-in? Should plug-ins be developed that do not require administrator
rights?
Several of my colleagues have recently encountered this problem at our
university and been unable to continue with a course in eLearning because they
do not have administrator rights, are denied access to their machines and the
computing department is too short staffed to help. I'd be interested to hear of
other list member's experiences and solutions to this small but significant
problem.
