SYMPOSIUM PERFORMANCES:
grapevine Ben Ponton
grapevine uses the game of Chinese whispers as a compositional determinant.
A sample of sound / music will be chosen as an original source from which
the sound work will be constructed. This is played to a single listener
(once only) who then vocally repeats as closely as possible the original
sound. The vocalisation is recorded and is used as a new original sound
which in turn is played to another listener who also vocalises the sound
heard, which is recorded, played to another listener and so on. This
process will continue throughout the Symposium day to maximise the
opportunity for interactive participation in the construction of an artwork.
The final performed soundwork will be presented during the Whitworth Art
Galleryıs evening programme.
Ben Ponton is a sound artist and performing musician based in Newcastle upon
Tyne. In addition to his own projects, he works with the innovative music
group, :zoviet*france: and, with Fiona Wright, is part of the performance
