The truth is it's pretty problematic. There's a good beginning to a
critique by Stella Bruzzi in the Introduction to her book 'New
Documentary: A Critical Introduction' (Routledge, 2000).
But are you thinking about theory or practice? There are problems with
Nichols in both areas.

Subject: question re nichols
I've noticed how pervasive Bill Nichols's paradigm for modes of
representation in documentary film has been. It is extremely handy for
organizing a syllabus--but anyone out there teaching/using it care to
comment on its strengths and/or weaknesses--philosophical and/or
pedagogical?
