David--
I strongly recommend Jonathan Rosenbaum's terrific book, ``Movie Wars,'' in
which Jonathan examines with his usual verve and nerve the myraid problems
with U.S. handling of foreign and ``difficult'' films, the various ways in
which the (mainly) print media fails to do its job as a critical observer of
the movies, and a large number of issues that fan out from these. Mark
Crispin Miller's writings are also something else you should look at it, for
some of his powerful critique of our weak critical establishment. The Nation
magazine's superb film critic, Stuart Klawans, frequently brings into his
writing examinations of how the press handles the movies; he has published a
few books.

I'm pulling together material for a course that explores the relationship
between cinema and journalism. It's a combination of practical workshops
with some reflection on the nature of popular criticism. Any suggestions for
course readings are more than welcome.
thanks
