This test has been done at our lab for the past 10 years.
Interesting to know where 'Chest' got its figures from, as
we tried to publish our results with them 2 years ago but
were rejected. Our results are better (2 year retrospective
study by third party hopsital) than previous methods. We
feel it is because we use HPLC, rather than a colorimetric
assay. The HPLC directly measures the stable reaction
product (inosine) rather than ammonia via a linked colour
development.
As we have mentioned before on this listing: For distant
hospitals, such as Dublin, we would prefer to help them set
up the method themselves rather then doing it for them, not
least because of the very unclear status of mailing and
handling pleural fluids.
