Like (the other) Trevor, I expect there are tests which may be useful
and shorten the decision process but the whole PSA debate shows how
careful you have to be. It is a good example of the collision between a
consumerist approach (everyone should be able to know (buy) their PSA,
Cholesterol level etc.) and evidence-based medicine.
