Is there space within the conference format to have some talks
which take a critical look at the way statistics are used, for
example in performance management? The performance indicators
may be 'democratically' stashed away on web sites, but what
about the alternative data which might allow people to question
them.
It seems a bit narrow to congratulate new Labour for putting up
Neighbourhood Statistics and for funding Humphrey's databases,
excellent though they both are, without also taking a more critical
look at the use of statistics by government, like we used to do
under the Tories.
