medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (20. December) is the feast day of:
Makarios and Eugenios (d. c. 362) Makarios and Eugenios were both priests
in Antioch. Both were imprisoned by opponents, tortured, and then banished
to the Mauretanian desert. Upon their return to their homeland, Julian the
Apostate had them beheaded. Other sources report that the two spent the
rest of their lives as missionaries in Mauretania, and died of natural
causes.
Blasios of Amorion (d. c. 910) Blasios was born in c. 825. At first he
was a monk in Rome, and then founded a monastery on Mt. Athos. He died in
Constantinople in c. 910.
Domingo of Silos (d. 1071) Domingo (Dominic) remains one of Spain's most
popular saints, and his tomb was for centuries a famous pilgrimage
attraction. Domingo was born in c. 1000 , and in c. 1030 entered the
Benedictine monastery of S. Millan de Cogolla (at that time in Navarre).
Domingo became prior, and in that office came into conflict with the king
of Navarre and was exiled. The king of Castile gave Domingo the monastery
of S. Sebastian in Silos, which he led from 1041 on, encouraging its
cultural and religious life. Domingo was already esteemed as a saint in
his lifetime, and in c.1100 the monastery he had held was renamed San
Domingo de Silos.
Vitus of Lithuania (blessed) (d. 1260) Vitus was born in c. 1190. He
became a Dominican friar, and devoted his life as a missionary bishop to
the Lithuanians.
