medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (21. December) is the feast day of:
Anastasios II of Antioch (d. 609) Anastasios was patriarch of Antioch from
599 until his death. According to legend, he was killed by enemies of the
faith.
Johannes Vincentius (d. 1012) Johannes was a native of Ravenna and is
supposed to have become bishop somewhere in th region of Ravenna in the
second half of the tenth century. Later he abdicated and became a hermit.
The hermitage and chapel he built for himself and his companions later
became the monastery of San Michele di Chiusa.
Domenico Spadafora (blessed) (d. 1521) Domenico was born in Sicily in
1450. At a young age he became a Dominican and spent the decades until his
death as a wandering preacher throughout Italy and Sicily. His cult was
approved in 1921.
I'm puzzled why, since there's such a shortage of interesting saints for
21. December, the latest Roman calendar moved the commemoration of Thomas
the Apostle from this date to the date of his translatio. Was it part of a
concerted effort to free up Advent?
