Thanks for clarifying this point about the default reply-to setting, Duncan.
I was led to raise it because the fact that e.g. Victoria's response
referred to me in the third person ("Michael's page") was an indicator that
she'd intended it for the list as a whole as well as me, and I've
occasionally heard people remark that a response they made never appeared
on the list (a fact they put down to an email system failure).
It's maybe worth also pointing out that people brave/rash enough to use
Windows email clients may find they have a button marked "Reply all"
alongside "Reply". If they choose that option when reading a posting here,
they should find that their mail client inserts both the sender and the list
address into the To: field of their mailer. If they then want to post to the
list, they can either send the reply as is, or maybe delete the sender's
address from the To: field (otherwise the sender will see the response
twice, once as a personal email, the second time as a list posting).
But it's important not to transfer the use of Reply All to answering
personal emails. That really can (and frequently does) cause huge
embarassment, for reasons I won't go into for fear of awakening too many
horrible memories among readers.
