medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Margaret,
In his "Church Life in England in the Thirteenth
Century" J R H Moorman calculated, on the basis of
thirteenth century Lincoln ordination lists, that
there were then an average of five clergy per parish.
Whether or not this obtained in practice is another
matter, but it would suggest that most parishes could
then muster three sacred ministers for High Mass. The
Chantry surveys of the 1546-48 period give some idea
of the numbers available in larger parishes - any
church with endowed chantries could obviously
(provided the clergy co-operated)still have done the
same. Some idea of late fourteenth century numbers can
be found in the material in A K McHardy's edition of
the Lincoln Clerical Poll Taxes (Lincoln Record
Society). Did unbeneficed chaplains supplement their
income by assisting at the main parochial altar(s)?
