medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear learned ones,
I wonder if anyone can help me with a question i am not
even sure that i am phrasing correctly:
what would be appropriate (or desirable) staff for an
"average" (whatever that means!) parish church in a rural area?
A resident priest, presumably, but what about deacons, etc?
would one normally find a deacon associated with a church
outside cities (or even in cities, aside from cathedrals?)
I am in the process of sorting thorugh icelanduc
church charters, all of which are careful to specify whether
a priest is to be resident or not; at some larger churches
there may be multiple priests and deacons specified.
obviously this allows for more elaborate services, and also
for services at annex churches dependent on the larger ones.
I would love to have some comparative material to put
the icelandic situation in context. my material is mostly
from the 14th century (some from the 13th),but anything
i could use for comparison would be of interest.
thanks in advance,
