medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Yes, there was a feast of St. Peter's Chains on 1 August. This was
originally the dedication feast of the church St. Peter erected on the
Esquiline Hill (4c), long known as S. Pietro in Vincoli [S. Petri in
vinculis] because some chains have been there, regarded as relics of those
used to chain St. Peter in prison. This feast was removed in either the 1960
or 1969 calendar reform. (Sorry, working in a hotel room this morning and
don't have calendars at hand.)
