But "Becket" at least isn't a last name. Frank Barlow explains in some
length in his biography of the archbishop that it was Thomas' father, not
Thomas himself, who sometimes used the distinguishing name "from Bec."
Thomas himself was always "Thomas of London," until he became "Thomas of
Canterbury."
The hagiographer of Peter Damian finds it necessary to explain why his
saint has something as outlandish as a second name.
