medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Greetings all!
during an all-to-brief visit to Utrecht, my curiosity
was sparked by the cell of an anchoress built into the
wall of the church of saint james, with two grilled windows
to enable the anchoress to observe events within the church.
I am vaguely aware that there is a huge literature on the
subject of anchoresses, and wondered if the learned members
of the list could direct me to scholarly works which would
provide some background. I am particularly interested in
the history of the practice of building cells of this sort
with a window into the church. what are the earliest examples?
is there any good architectural or archaeological evidence
of the practice from elsewhere?
thanks in advance,
