military "banners," presumably each with its own distinctive markings, appear
amongst the legionaires on the columns of Trajan and Hadrian, do they not? a
bit of a different form --they hang from cross pieces at the top of the
vertically-held poles, probably to make them more easy to "read." Nazis at
the great Nuremburg rallies had the same.
the idea of having a raised emblem of some sort for the guys in your unit to
rally around before, during and after a bit of a dust-up would be a pretty
elementary bit of military organisation, seems to me.

but the (or: *one* of the, at least) scenes with the lance/banner is
depicted in an 18th c. drawing? or am i getting my banner-conferring scenes
confused. again.
