medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I seem to recall that the mosaics were subject to restoration in the 14c when the popes moved back to Rome only to find the Lat. uninhabitable (along with ideological motivations, one of the reasons for their move to the Vatican complex). Fontana the "obelisk guy" was also puttering around the Lateran buildings in a big way in the 16th, though I don't know off the top o' my head whether he futzed with the triclinium. I think Krautheimer has a good discussion, for starters, but I am nagged by memories of more recent debate on "restorations" made to the Leo-Peter-Charlemagne mosaic. I'll try to check it out and get back to you.
