medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Bernadette,
The context for the entry on Sarabites in Clyn in 1309 probably has to do
with the disputes over the observance of poverty in the Franciscan Order
between the Spiritual Friars and the laxer 'friars of the community' ('of
the common life', 'Conventuals'). An entry in the Annals of Innisfallen for
1311 identifies the sarabaites with the followers of the Spiritual
Franciscan leader Peter of John Olivi. It is clear from the entry that the
Innisfallen annalist (a Franciscan, for this section, according to the
editor) disapproved of their activities very strongly and Clyn's use of a
monastic term of opprobrium (Sarabaite) indicates that he shared this view.
It provides an interesting indication of how aware the Irish friars were of
the issues dividing the order at this period.
