Many of these issues are addressed by Raymond E. Brown in his 1979 work The
Community of the Beloved Disciple (Chapman, London; Paulist Press, New
York). He is particulary interesting on the relationship between the early
Christians and the followers of John the Baptist. I don't know the extent to
which later communiteis were aware of these tensions.
