well you asked for responses, so here goes. as you know christopher, you
and i often agree on a number of things, and i've always appreciated your
irreverant tone. and i even agree with you that allowing postings by list
members for people not on the list, and even reposting remarks by former
list members, like bill east, seems perfectly plausible.
but your tone seems off the wall. venting spleen is not a particularly
good way to get a sympathetic hearing... that is, if that's what you
want. i think you cd have made all those points without the
invective. (if you want a good model for going on a rant, listen to dennis
miller [to be distinguished from dennis martin (:-) ].) and i don't think
the list-owners, whose judgment i am willing to trust even when i don't
necessarily agree with specific policies, are likely to listen to what you
have to say.
i think there's an impt distinction to be made btwn politeness and
civility. politeness means not saying certain things lest it lead to
blows, civility means being able to say those things and it doesn't lead to
blows. civility calls for lots of effort and lots of respect. to pull it
off , you need to be both honest and respectful. you only did the first,
and in the process only harmed a process of civility that we all covet.
