Purpose
It is becoming increasingly important to assess Health Related Quality of Life
(HRQoL) alongside clinical outcomes in health related studies. Of particular focus
will be the use of standardised instruments within randomised clinical trials. The
objective is to give a clear understanding of the ‘when and why’ such HRQoL
measures are important. This will include aspects of the design of instruments,
data summary, as well as practical aspects of their use and clinical interpretation
(including reporting) of the subsequent findings. The purpose of the course is to
inform those working in health services, academia, industry and related fields of
the rationale, methodology and interpretation of HRQoL in patients. Although the
course is not primarily specifically designed for medical statisticians and health
economists, it will provide a useful overview of many aspects of HRQoL for those
working in these related fields. The course text provided to all participants is: PM
Fayers and D Machin (2000) Quality of Life: Assessment, Analysis and
Interpretation. Wiley, Chichester. However, the material presented will not be
confined to this text.

Members of the Clinical Trials Research Unit have extensive experience in the
design, conduct, analysis and reporting of randomised and early stage clinical
trials over a wide spectrum of diseases and conditions. They have published
extensively in both the clinical and statistical literature. These have included
texts on biomathematics, medical statistics, sample sizes for clinical studies,
survival analysis and quality of life. Specific research interests include the design
of cluster randomised trials and quality of life. There is extensive experience on
the British Medical Journal panel of statistical referees and with other medical
journals. The Unit also houses the editorial office of Statistics in Medicine.
