This Library Association briefing will review data that may shock, worry,
and inspire those who have to take decisions about the future of the
service. It is not one you can afford to miss!
Recruit, Retain, Lead -
The Public Library Workforce Study
28 February, LAHQ, London
The Public Library Workforce Project was designed to help the public library
service recruit, retain, support, and develop a workforce appropriate to the
current and future needs of the service. The aim was to increase the amount
and quality of information available to library managers, educators, and
selectors. It examined the following areas:
* Employers' Needs and the DLIS Curriculum
* To what extent do Departments of Librarianship & Information
Studies' (DLIS) curricula meet the needs of the market?
*
* Career Choice
* What are the influences that determine students' choice of library /
information career?
*
* Recruitment and Selection
* What attracts staff to the public library service and what causes
them to reject the idea?
*
* The Retention of Professional Staff
* How can we keep the people we want?
*
* Training and Development.
* What are the strengths and weaknesses of training and development
initiatives currently adopted in public libraries.
*
* Career Aspirations and Opportunities
* How might these be better matched and professional stagnation
minimised.
*
* Leadership and Succession Planning
What are the leadership skills and personal attributes that are
required if the public library is to be a major force in the years to come?
Two years and a million words later, researchers at the University of
Sheffield have evidence of a personnel timebomb that is slowly ticking away.
