INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF MUSIC LIBRARIANS: UK BRANCH
2001 ANNUAL STUDY WEEKEND
APOSTLES OF EQUALITY: MUSIC IN CULTURE AND LEARNING
6 - 9 APRIL 2001, SPARSHOLT COLLEGE, WINCHESTER
The theme is broad, exploring as it does the place of music in our cultural
life, its importance to the fabric of society and to today's political
agendas of social inclusion and lifelong learning.
Sir David Watson, Chair of the South East of England Cultural Consortium
and Director of the University of Brighton will give the opening keynote
exploring the importance of music in our culture and the role of the
Regional Cultural Consortia. The study weekend will also offer
opportunities for keeping up to date with current programmes via our
Saturday report and information sessions, and a detailed look at come
critical factors facing our profession in the Sunday morning workshops.
Both these sections of the programme are aimed at ensuring that music
library staff are equipped with the skills and knowledge they need in
today's fast-changing environment.
The study weekend takes place in Jane Austen country and, to celebrate
this, Martin Souter - who has brought the music of Jane Austen's time to
life through performing and recording music from the collections assembled
by her on instruments at the family home in Chawton - will be presenting an
illustrated lecture for us on Saturday evening. Along the way, we will
also take time to celebrate centenaries of Finzi and Rubbra, look at what
it means to publish an Urtext of a composer's work, and to launch Encore!
IAML(UK)'s web catalogue of performance sets, funded by the British Library
Co-operation and Partnership programme. We close on a suitably
forward-looking note with a think-piece from Chris Batt, Director of the
Learning and Information Society Team at Resource, on what ICT holds for
the future development of our cultural resources.
