Research Assistant:
Simulation of Air Travel and Climate Change Impacts
The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering and the Department of
Physics are jointly seeking a research assistant for a project on the
Simulation of Air Travel and Climate Change Impacts.
This study will utilize a three-dimensional air space modelling system that
will be linked with databases of aircraft emissions and will be used to
model climate change impacts from contrail formation. The objective is to
analyse the climate change impact of various alternative growth scenarios
for European airspace.
Applicants should have a background in Transport, Civil Engineering,
Physics, Environmental Studies or related fields. Applicants with a Ph.D
will receive special consideration. Knowledge of a programming language
such as Fortran or C++ is required as is the ability to work with large
databases. A knowledge of environmental policy and issues related to air
transport is a plus.
The length of employment is for up to 15 months at the RA1 level with a
salary of £18,909 to £20,865 (includes London allowance). This project will
be jointly supervised by Dr. Robert Noland in the Centre for Transport
Studies and Dr. Ralf Toumi in the Dept. of Physics.
Imperial College is the leading Science and Engineering institution within
the University of London. The Department of Civil and Environmental
Engineering is widely recognised as one of Europe's centres of excellence in
Civil and Environmental Engineering. The Centre for Transport Studies
(which operates in partnership with its sister group at University College
London) is one of the largest and most successful transport groups in Europe
(www.cts.cv.ic.ac.uk). The Atmospheric Physics group at Imperial College is
concerned with the modeling of climate change, instrumentation and analysis
of Earth Observation data (www.sp.ph.ic.ac.uk).
