DESIGN PRINCIPLES FOR LEARNING & TEACHING WEB SITES
A one-day workshop from ALT
DATE: 16 May 2001
VENUE: University of Bristol

OVERVIEW
This workshop will introduce design principles for learning and
teaching web sites. It will focus on good design principles and
relevant pedagogy, and will include pointers to relevant tools and
methods. It will not involve training with web site development tools.
Participants will be expected to come with a specific site in mind for
development.
The workshop is aimed at practitioners who are new to web-based
learning and teaching, and who feel they need a better
understanding of design principles in order to provide effective
resources for targeted groups of users.
TOPICS TO BE COVERED
The workshop will cover a range of topics including:
1. A review of web sites to draw up personal checklists of good and
bad practice 2. An introduction to a range of issues, including: *
Identifying stakeholders (users, content providers, technical staff) *
Clarifying the pedagogic role of the site * Tools for the job (from
writing HTML in Notepad through to VLEs) * Methods for usability
testing and evaluation * Structure, maintenance and future proofing *
Other issues, such as metadata, copyright and accessibility 3. The
application of personal checklists to participants' sites, leading to
a plan for development.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
This workshop will be of particular interest to lecturers thinking of
setting up (or improving) sites for a course; project officers
responsible for a project web site; staff responsible for marketing
short courses or resources; or, administrators responsible for web
sites that support student learning (eg by providing key text,
administrative information).

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS
Dr Grainne Conole is Director of the Institute for Learning and
Research Technology at the University of Bristol.
Dr Martin Oliver is a lecturer in the Higher Education Research and
Development Unit, University College London. He has worked on a
range of projects, concentrating on evaluation and online learning,
including the TLTP projects EFFECTS and FOCUS.
