Aims
The session works from the position that there are particular issues
in teaching writing skills to art and design students in addition to
general academic writing concerns. The session aims to identify what
these issues are based on our own experience, our research findings
and the experience of the participants for this session. We then aim
to offer ideas on how to address these issues both at individual
student and organisational level. The experiential nature of the
visual curriculum needs to be acknowledged and harnessed to support
writing.
Process
The session will be a combination of input, group discussion and group tasks.
Participants
This event is designed for academic staff who are involved in
developing the writing skills of art and design students. This could
include both cultural studies and staff working in a study support or
writing centre role.
About the workshop leader(s)
Margo Blythman and Susan Orr are the teaching and learning co-ordinators in the
London College of Printing and the London College of Fashion,
respectively. They have wide experience in teaching writing
development and in setting up study support
units in higher education. They are also actively involved in
research on student writing with particular reference to art and
design students.
