Discover how to communicate physics effectively to all sorts of audiences at a Physics Communications day organised by the Institute of Physics' London and South East Branch and the Institute's Public Affairs team.
JOURNALISTS and PROFESSIONAL SCIENCE COMMUNICATORS will help YOU to learn the tricks of the trade.
Hear advice and pick up useful tips on how you can best raise an awareness of physics and get accurate information to the media; get involved in discussions about physics and the media; meet other people involved in physics communication.
The day is free to all delegates from Institute affiliated schools. A registration fee is payable for all others to attend.

1030 - 1100 Attitudes to science communication - what scientists and the public really think about each other
What's current in science communication policy, the reasons why science should be made accessible to the public and what information and support is available for people who want to communicate science.

This interactive session will involve delegates in addressing the following issues: What is my goal? What is my message? Who are my audience? What medium should I use? How will I know I have succeeded?

A talk about the trials and rewards of organising a public event, including people, place, publicity, funding and evaluating. Find out what types of event you can organise, where to hold them and the help you may need.

1400 - 1700 How does the media report physics and physicists?
An afternoon of debate, discussion and practical exercises in dealing with the media including practical sessions on how to write a news story, advice on broadcasting and what to do when it all goes wrong!
