APOLOGIES FOR CROSS-POSTING
Science writers are invited to meet Professor David Southwood, Director of Science at the European Space Agency, at a special briefing to be held at The Institute of Physics (see below for address) on 23 October at 3.30pm before an evening seminar on 'Space'. Professor Southwood will be speaking at the seminar, which will look at the exploration and exploitation of space in a modern society.
Since the launch of Sputnik over half a century ago, space exploration has excited and interested people all over the world, but the technology needed to find out more about our universe can also benefit society as a whole. This seminar aims to find out if science still leads the way into space, what the next discoveries might be and finally, how science in space underpins a broader use of space to improve our day to day lives.
The format for the briefing session will be similar to ABSW lunches - tea, coffee and light refreshments will be provided. Journalists are also most welcome to stay on to the evening seminar itself. Pre-registration is essential, please contact Alice Bows, at Public Affairs, Institute of Physics, 76 Portland Place, London, W1N 3DH, Tel: 0207 470 4800, E-mail: [log in to unmask] for details.
