Mental: an exploration of creativity, emotion and feeling
7.00pm
Mental is an award winning personal exploration of the art and science of
the creative mind. Tonight Helen Storey talks to her collaborative partner,
Dr John McLachlan about the inspiration behind the exhibition, and how art
and science can have a meaningful dialogue (if at all). While the
completion of the Human Genome Project seems to represent the triumph of
genetic explanations, there is an increasing realisation that life is more
than genes. Mental provides a perfect illustration of the non-deterministic
nature of biology - and explores the way art reflects both our individuality
and our commonality. In the chair is Mark Lythgoe, a neurophysiologist
based at the Institute of Child Health and Great Ormond Street Hospital,
where he uses MRI techniques for investigating brain functions; over the
past 8 years, Mark has also collaborated with a variety of artists and has
produced works ranging from sculptures to film.
