Certainly the commercial marketplace is one democratic control on
design and production? No, not clean, neat, and always right, nor is
it free from the influence of the powerful, but what form of democracy
is?
I am not suggesting that the market needs to be the only control but
it is a powerful one. Choice can only work if there is free
discussion of issues. If we believe in democracy, that would argue
that it is more important for designers and others involved in
products and systems to be open and honest than to be "right" by some
other ethical standards.
