Dear Terry,
Interesting post.
Important issues.
My guess is that many of these issues have to do with exactly what
you note: windows. levels and frames of analysis.
One of the purposes of research is to generate accurate reports that
permit others to do good theory and conceptualization without
returning to the source of data. At the same time, contingency, path
dependency and change in complex adaptive systems often affect the
empirical foundation of research reports. So, too, may the frame and
level of knowledge of the discipline when research was first
conducted.
Inm the human sciences, this means that research may have been
truthful, accurate, conceptually brilliant and theoretically robust
when first published, while changes to the world itself may mean that
it is no longer so.
There are subtleties involved here that I must think about. I suspect
I agree with you, but there is something missing in both your account
and mine that accounts for seeming differences.
I've got think on this for a few days before responding.
Best regards,
Ken
