We are facing the same problems in teaching undergraduates and I am sure Jan is
right in saying that the iea of common first years is overrated.
On the other hand our postgraduate students in design form a single cohort and,
since the postgraduate agenda is more about leadership in your field, research
and context of your work than it is about polishing your disciplinary skills,
this works well. One thing we do with great success is to get students to
present each other's work in seminars rather than their own and we never have
to worry about matching the students' disciplines.
I am also sure that there is plenty of scope for final year BA students to work
in cross-disciplinary groups although I don't think there is much scope for
teaching efficiency there since supervising projects takes a certain amount of
teacher's overview and intervention and we are pretty close to the minimum on
that already.
Incidentally, although this is a very interesting subject it might be more
productive to raise it on the GLADNET (Learning in Art and Design) mail list
than in a list mainly concerned with Doctorates and research.
best wishes from Sheffield
