Apologies for stating what might be the obvious, but isn't the
late Donald Schoen's concept of the reflective practitioner a
possible way if approaching the most recent thread on the
relations between practicing and theorizing
(writing/thinking-about/reflecting)?
I tend to find it quite useful. It entails many important issues
concerning the nature of design knowledge that has implications
for the notion of a PhD in design. For example: artefacts as part
of an argument (in a wide sense) rather than mere illustration,
design practice as part of knowledge construction, knowledge
dissemination as facilitating the development of a repertoire,
the nature of the components of this repertoire, etc.
