It might be a long shot but near Tankersley was Barley Hall
Colliery,still
operational in 1959,employing 476 men and producing gas and household
coal from the Top Fenton seam,a variable split coal.No idea when the mine
was sunk but its size and position(at Thorpe Hesley/Chapeltown)west of the
outcrop of the Barnsley Seam and close to the Parkgate outcrop suggests a
fairly old unit.
