Dear colleagues,
A few weeks ago a message was forwarded to LIS-Medical from Dr Abd-UL-Amir
K AL-Ganimee,
Director, Psychiatry Department, Babylon University Medical College, Iraq,
expressing need for textbooks. Fiona McLean gave some info on getting
licenses to send materials to Iraq, and mentioned the involvement of the
BMA.
In order to see whether materials for Iraq could be handled by a single
organization in the UK, I contacted the BMA. The BMA are donating books and
other materials via the charity 'Medical Aid for Iraqi Children', based at
26, Old Brompton Road, London SW7 3DL, tel: 020 7581 2727, fax: 020 7581
2767, e-mail: [log in to unmask] The contact is Mrs May Al-Daftari. I called
May Al-Daftari and she says she'd be very happy to consider distributing
any offers via their charity.
Best wishes,
Neil

No reply yet from BL colleague so went direct: general info on FCO website
(http://www.fco.gov.uk/news/keythemehome.asp?23) but not v specific. I rang
them up and was told its now OK to donate things like this, fortunately.
(There's also now a setup where they are allowed to use money from oil for
some humanitarian purchases, but I'm sure that funding is under huge
pressure).
However, under either set-up you need to get an export license from the DTI
Sanctions Licensing Unit to do it. I have the contact details for the
individual involved if anyone wants them. They are keen on this kind of
humanitarian move, tho, and apparently the BMA has already been involved
(according to FCO). So dont let the extra paperwork put you off donating!

Subject: Iranian academic psychiatrist desperately needs books
I have today received a letter from an Iranian academic psychiatrist who
is
experiencing enormous difficulty in obtaining access to any professional
publications in English owing to the effect of sanctions. He is
appealing
for donations particularly of current books in any branch of psychiatry,
but
I don't suppose he would be averse to large journal back runs, e.g. of
Br J
Psychiatry, either! He is also looking for sponsorship to enable him to
attend conferences abroad.
If you have any duplicates or withdrawn items for disposal, perhaps you
would consider sending them to:
