ADVANCED MUSEOLOGY FOR PROFESSIONALS: A short course
Aimed at museum and gallery professionals this new course is content led,
building on recent research and a deep working knowledge of museums and
galleries to develop original course material. Specifically developed
case-studies that integrate theoretical and practical elements will form the
basis for dynamic interaction between all students, from whom there will be
an expectation of participation at a practical and scholarly level. In
addition to the analysis of historical and contemporary museum and gallery
practices, the course aims to develop productive ways of working within
institutions that are alert to current debates. While recognising that
collections, educational programming and curation are always circumscribed
by history, funding and institutional politics, the course will emphasise
sustainable strategies for critical practice.
Designed to enable participation from across the UK and Europe, distance
learning is combined with an intensive teaching week based at The British
Museum, Tate Modern and other central London venues. On site teaching in
London allows for the first hand exploration of collections, archives and
institutional space. Thereafter tutorials and bibliographic material are
tailored to support students while the assessment focuses on the students'
home institution and connects the course to the workplace.
Advanced Museology has been developed as a collaborative project between
Birkbeck, the Institute of Education and The British Museum. Curatorial,
academic and education staff from across the institutions will contribute to
teaching delivery.
