We run a number of INSET courses at the Science Museum, including the
now very popular one-day Internet courses, such as Writing for the Web
and IT animation and interactivity. As part of each course we give a
brief introduction, tailored to the particular group, to what is on
offer at the Museum. Of the 10-15 who attend each of the Internet
days, a good proportion will then visit with their classes and/or take
part in one of our Internet projects directly as a result of attending
the course. A couple of the Internet projects themselves also draw
teachers in directly, since a visit to the Museum is an essential
element of participation.
Our other INSET sessions, for example introductions to using the Museum
for particular target educational audiences, also draw schools in
subsequently, although many will use them to aid planning of visits
already anticipated. Education Business Partnerships are proving a
useful recruitment source for these.

Subject: INSET
Dear List Members
INSET is often mentioned, but I wonder whether you find that it is an
effective way to reach teachers, inform them about your services and
encourage teachers to use them? Can anyone please give some examples
of what works, either in terms of INSET or other methods to encourage
teachers to visit with their schools?
Thank you very much for your help with this.
