MUSEUM LEARNING

A new accredited course to support the
professional development of those involved in museum education



This innovative course has been designed by the Institute of Education,
University of London in partnership with GEM  to meet the needs of new
entrants to museum education.  The course is also likely to be of interest
to freelance educators who wish to update their skills.


Course aims:
o       to address contemporary issues in museum education;
o    to identify areas of educational need within participants' work
settings;
o      to develop a strategic plan for an identified institution.


Course content:
o      understanding museum audiences;
o        learning from objects;
o education programmes and services;
o     partnerships and networking;
o   designing a museum education project.


Mode of attendance:
Attendance is required on the following days:

Thurs      10th Jan        2002
Thurs       17th Jan        2002
Thurs       24th Jan        2002
Thurs       31st Jan        2002
Thurs       7th Feb 2002
Thurs       14th Feb        2002

In addition participants are required to carry out some museum-based
research during directed study time with the support of experienced museum
educators, to be arranged via the GEM network.

    Lesley Burgess, Lecturer in Art & Design Education,
     Institute of Education

Sessions will be led by staff of the Art & Design Education Academic Group
at the Institute of Education and leading professionals from the museum
education sector.





Accreditation:
The course is accredited by the Institute of Education, University of
London, as an element in the Advanced Diploma in Professional Studies.  On
successful completion of the course, and on submission of a 4,000 words
written assignment, participants will be awarded 20 credit points towards
the Diploma (120 credits for the full Diploma).


Fee:
The fee for the course is £450.
